Our 10th Anniversary! So much to celebrate! This year ReelWorld featured a festive edition showcasing of fresh films from Aboriginal, Asian, Black, Latino, Middle Eastern, South Asian and other multi-racial communities. The festival’s 10th anniversary Opening Night Gala took place at Scotiabank Theatre on Wednesday, April 7th. Our opening film, Off World, was shot on location in Manila and follows a young man searching for his birth parents in the slums of Smokey Mountain. The film is a much anticipated feature from acclaimed writer, director and co-producer Mateo Guez. Bryon Wong, also a co-producer, composed the music and helped to enlist David Usher as the film’s narrator.
This year we screened many great features, documentaries, shorts and music videos, including Nollywood Babylon, Sex Volunteer and 1999. The Festival held its annual Brunch with Brilliance Awards Ceremony on Sunday April 11, at Brassaii Restaurant and Lounge. Some of the awards handed out included: seven awards selected by ReelWorld jurors were handed out to filmmakers, the CBC Audience Choice Award was presented for the film most voted for by festival-goers, and the ReelWorld Trailblazer awards for personal achievement were also presented. ReelWorld presents these awards annually as part of its commitment to recognize the work of ethnically and culturally diverse filmmakers. Special thanks to Cineplex Media for sponsoring the event.
