Telefilm Canada Announces March 5, 2012 as Opening Date for Funding Applications

February 22, 2012 - Telefilm Canada will accept funding applications for English-language productions through three Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF) programs as of March 5, 2012. These applications will be for fiscal 2012-2013. The programs opening March 5, 2012 concern: Regional Production; Low Budget Independent Feature Film Assistance Program; Alternative Distribution Program.

Martha Durdin has been re-appointed as Ontario Arts Council Chair

February 22, 2012 - Martha Durdin has been reappointed Chair of the Ontario Arts Council by the Government of Ontario until 2015. Martha was named to the Board of Directors of the OAC in 2004, appointed Chair in 2006 and first reappointed in 2009. During her tenure, OAC’s funding has increased by $20 million, bringing the Government of Ontario’s total investment in the Ontario Arts Council to over $60 million per year.

Gemini Awards Introduce New Co-Productions Category

February 22, 2012 – The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has announced that the Gemini Awards have changed their rules and added a new category for international co-productions. The change will take effect for 2012.

Three Trailblazer Award Recipients Announced for 2012

The Trailblazer Award recognizes the accomplishments of ethnically diverse Canadian entertainment industry professionals whose work has broadened our horizons. We are happy to announce three of our 6 2012 Trailblazer Award recipients; Tushar Unadkat, Shernold Edwards and Lisa Jackson. Stay turned for when we announce our next 3 Trailblazers!

Tushar Unadkat

Internationally celebrated CEO and Creative Director of MUKTA Advertising, Tushar Unadkat holds a Master in Design degree from University of Dundee, Scotland and Honors in Photography from University of Wolverhampton, England. In the past decade, Tushar has executed art direction in the film, fashion, advertising and events industry in USA, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Netherlands, India and Canada.

Winning 14 international awards, he has worked with OSCAR winning Producers and Editors in the past as the Production Designer making a significant name in the Western Cross-Over Film-Industry earning credits on more than 25 feature films in his portfolio.

Shernold Edwards

Shernold has roots in both half hour comedies and hour long dramas. She was a co-producer on CTV’s The Listener, and an ESE on Shawmedia’s cop drama Shattered. She was also the co-executive producer of season two of the half-hour comedy ‘Da Kink In My Hair, and wrote for the youth series Instant Star. Shernold was previously a production and development executive at CTV where her projects included the Gemini Award-winning Doomstown, and Last Exit. Shernold attended the Canadian Film Centre’s Professional Screenwriting Program (aka ‘Bootcamp’) and has an MFA in screenwriting from Columbia University. She was a participant of 2007 TIFF Talent Lab, and attended the 2008 Banff Television Festival as a participant of the Canwest Showrunner Program. In 2008, she was featured as one of Playback Magazine’s Next 25. Shernold is currently writing an adaptation of the acclaimed novel A Day Late and A Dollar Short, by Terry McMillan (Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back) for Ostar Enterprises and Lifetime. She is represented by Elizabeth Newman and Rob Kenneally of CAA (Creative Artists Agency) in Los Angeles, and Elina Levina of Harrison Artists Management in Toronto.

Lisa Jackson

A 2011 Genie Award winner, Lisa Jackson has a background in documentary filmmaking, which includes the acclaimed short film Suckerfish and the CTV one-hour drama Reservation Soldiers. Lisa expanded into fiction filmmaking with her Genie Award winning short film Savage. She recently completed the CFC short Parkdale, and is currently writing her first feature, and continues to work on both fiction and documentary projects.

February 9, 2012 - Award winning composer Vikas Kohli has scored with a live orchestra for a Korean film Wild Goose Daddy. Vikas, who has produced music for Bollywood films, documentaries and art films, scored the music with 28 classically trained musicians at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. In 2011, Vikas received a Trailblazer award from the ReelWorld Film Festival.

Director sneaked into Fukushima exclusion zone to research pic

February 7, 2012 – Sion Sono is following up Himizu, which he rewrote to include the March tsunami, with Land of Hope, a family drama set after a huge earthquake and Fukushima-type nuclear accident. Shooting of Land of Hope began last weekend as Himizu was giving the cult director his biggest opening in Japan, pulling in around 3.5 million yen ($450,000) in two days.

February 7, 2012 - The Banff World Media Festival, with Shaw Media, has launched the 2012 edition of the Global Writers Apprentice Program. This program offers emerging Canadian writers the opportunity to gain significant experience with access to the Banff World Media Festival and the opportunity to complete an internship in the story department of a prime-time series. The program is open to individual writers as well as to established writing teams with a track record together.
