PROGRAMMERS NOTES
Possibly the youngest director programmed at Reelworld this year, Filmmaker Derius Matchewan’s documentary provides its viewer with profundity and wisdom well beyond his years. Matchewan’s understanding of the complexity of loss and its attachment to his understanding of his culture is simple, yet nuanced and inspiring. Derius’s film is striking as his pride in his culture shines through normalized narratives pertaining to strife of the “other” - asking us as viewers to challenge our perceptions of what we think we know about those who have been made foreign to us by Eurocentric institutions.
