Alison Duke’s Promise Me is a heart wrenching story of resilience and the love between a mother and a daughter. As this film is inspired by true events, Duke tackles difficult and emotional subject matter straight on while also making a poignant and necessary comment about the flaws of the system and its effect on marginalized people.
Though heartbreaking to watch at times, Duke does a lovely job of highlighting the fierce and unapologetic love between mother and daughter while also unearthing and showcasing the gentler facets of the love that binds them.
Alison is a unique storyteller in that her work simultaneously documents the present, illuminates history, and pushes the conversation about taboo topics. She co-founded OYA Media Group and co-created the Canadian Screen Award-winning documentary Mr. Jane and Finch. She is currently developing her second narrative film and a music documentary.
