PROGRAMMERS NOTES

Approached by Dr. Julius Garvey, the youngest son of the Pan-Africanist radical, Marcus Garvey to tell the story of the thinker’s life, director Roy T. Anderson knew this film required care to craft the story of a man misunderstood both through his history and in his time.

The film chronicles the life of Garvey and the lasting impact of his radical teachings. From the West Indies, across Africa and to the heart of Empire, the film chronicles the life of the great activist using a mix of archival images, dramatization, scholar insights and interviews from present-day followers of Garveyism. Looking at the movement of black people at the turn of the 20th century, Garvey’s teachings are more prevalent than ever. What does self-determinism look like in the face of white terror? When one doesn’t have the means to control their livelihood, how do you fight back?
