UN PRINTEMPS D’AILLEURS (A TOUCH OF SPRING)
A dramatic fight. A traumatic realization: she can’t get pregnant. The couple separates. As a Chinese Quebecois she goes back to China, and tries to reconnect, “I am from here…” but confronts issues of displacement, cultural tradition, and family secrets. Still clinging to her old relationship, while dodging questions of being without child. After a while the pretence is too much. This is a portrait of Chinese life in all its contemporary glory and existential complexity, with some skillful performances providing a comic touch.
Li Fang (Wensi Yan) is a Chinese immigrant who has been living in Montreal for over 10 years. Her infertility and her violent separation from her Québécois husband, Eric (Émile Proulx-Cloutier), have pushed her to the brink of despair. Escaping the chaos in Montreal, Li Fang visits her grandfather in Dazu, her birthplace in south China. The support and inspiration provided by her family and an old lover helps her break the impasse in her life.
