BOYS OF NUNAVUT

Cast members: Kukik Baker, Dr. Michael Jong, Jimmy Napayok, The Boys of Nunavut

Programmer notes:

Boys of Nunavut is a powerful, moving and necessary documentary about the mental health crisis taking place situated in Arviat, Nunavut. Director Andrew Maguire’s film shines a light on this issue caused by the loss of identity as a result of assimilation, and the hope that is the Young Hunters Program, an initiative created by community members to help at-risk youth.

Synopsis:

Our documentary opens in the remote community of Arviat. We meet Dr. Michael Jong a physician and former Vice President of the Canadian Society of Circumpolar Health and Kukik Baker, a community activist and guide who detail life in Arviat and give us historical context to what has become one of the largest mental health crises in the world.  The picture is bleak. The suicide rate is 25 times the national average and within young men, it’s 40 times the national average. Both Kukik and Dr. Jong have dedicated themselves to understanding the issue and looking for a solution to curb this national tragedy. They might have found one.

Dr. Jong, along with community leaders, researchers and elders created the “Young Hunters Program”, which allows at-risk youth to go out onto the land with an experienced guide to explore their culture and learn their way of life. We turn our lenses to this program and head out onto the land for a week long expedition with 5 youth and 5 guides to see if it can work.
