JAP tells the story of two prisoners held at the Gila River Japanese internment camp. One day, they attempt an escape to see freedom again, but when they are lost in the endless desert, Daiki takes a great risk. Based on a true story from director Derek Pike’s grandfather, this film reminds us of the little-known, horrific treatment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.
Set in 1945, Daiki & Sam frustrated by the never ending confines of the Gila River Japanese internment camp, decide to chance a naive exit. An opportunity to see life outside again, a life they used to know. An opportunity to escape the mental and physical prison they've been subjected to. An opportunity that carries great consequence. Based on a true story.
Derek Pike is a mixed race half-Japanese and half-English director residing in Los Angeles. He graduated Cum Laude from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts film program. At the age of 21, he became one of the youngest directors to have a music video featured on MTV, and has directed over 100 music videos with multiple #1's on MTV and BET countdown shows.
