Lyriq Bent is an award winning Television/Film and Stage actor from Toronto. Earlier this year, Lyriq collaborated with Tyler Perry on his feature project, Acrimony, as the male lead opposite Taraji P. Henson. In the spring of 2016 at the Canadian Screen Awards, Lyriq took home the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the BET/CBC mini series, The Book Of Negroes. He is also known for his role in the popular horror mystery franchise Saw, action drama Four Brothers and the television series Rookie Blue. Lyriq also completed the romantic drama, Nappily Ever After, for Netflix. Lyriq is currently filming season 2 of Spike Lee’s half-hour series, She’s Gotta Have It for Netflix.
What drives you?
My self-motivation is driven by my passion for acting and the fear of failure.
Advice to someone just starting out?
If you’re not passionate you won’t make it. You’re always “starting out.”Like a lawyer or doctor, this is your practice. You’re constantly working on your craft. Stay passionate.
Who impacted your career the most?
I’ve been blessed to work with some incredibly talented people both in front and behind the camera, who’ve all impacted my career.
How did you build the team around you?
It’s been an organic process for me. I’ve been very lucky that way. My agent Angela Argento has been with me from day one and my manager/business partner Gorav Seth has been with me since 2004. It’s all fallen into place.
Was it luck or strategy that helped you find success?
The moderate success I’ve had is a result of hard work, consistency and some luck.
Did you ever give up hope that you’d not make it?
Giving up is never an option. My brain doesn’t work that way.
What was your worst experience in this business?
I’m blessed to not have a worst. (YET!)
What was your best experience in this business?
My best experience has been to travel to places like South Africa and Europe. That combined with being able to tell stories such as The Book Of Negroes, Home Again and Nappily Ever After.

The theme of my resume if there is one, is strong complex characters.
