Toronto Poetry Slam presents a night of poetry with purpose. Join us as the city’s top spoken word artists share poems inspired by three of our short films. From meditations on schizophrenia and low-income housing to thoughts on the refugee experience, this is a night of important rhymes you’ll remember.

SLEEPING WITH FAMILY

A shared bed with Mom and Dad; a couch in the living room. Forced into close quarters by economic necessity, fifteen teenagers open up about their experiences with shared sleeping arrangements in Toronto’s low-income neighborhood of Parkdale. Through giggles and tough pauses, these teens explore their struggle for privacy and yearning for space while revealing the many ways in which Toronto’s kids grow up behind doors.

Sara and her brother, Deji, who suffers from schizophrenia, explore the beauty and challenges of this chronic illness during an eventful afternoon with Deji’s goldfish.

Addiction takes a toll on everyone. A young mother returns home from another stint at rehab estranged from her siblings and son. Determined to get her life together, she must face the challenge of repairing her broken relationships and the real responsibility of parenting.
