Alethea Arnaquq-Baril is an award-winning Inuit filmmaker and producer whose work challenges global audiences to see contemporary Indigenous peoples in a new light. Known for bringing authentic Inuit perspectives to the screen in ways both delightful and poignant, she is the co-creator and executive producer of North of North, the breakout Netflix original comedy series which premiered in 2025. Following its premiere on Canada’s CBC and APTN and its global launch on Netflix, North of North became a critical and commercial phenomenon, reaching the platform's Top 10 in dozens of countries and securing a second season renewal. Under her creative leadership, the series layers heartfelt, character-driven comedy with rich portrayals of contemporary Inuit life. The show also earned a nomination for Best New Scripted Series at the 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards and topped both TV and overall nominations with a haul that included Best Comedy Series at this year's Canadian Screen Awards. Prior to her success in scripted television, Arnaquq-Baril established herself as a vital voice in Canadian cinema through her production company, Unikkaat Studios. Her acclaimed feature documentary, Angry Inuk, won the Audience Award at Hot Docs and the TIFF People’s Choice Award, cementing her reputation for tackling complex cultural themes with nuance, humor, and heart. Today, she continues to push boundaries, drawing international acclaim for her vibrant storytelling and her commitment to bringing Indigenous-led narratives to audiences worldwide.
Each year the Reelworld Trailblazer Awards recognize six racially diverse industry professionals who are inspiring others and blazing their own trail in the Canadian media and entertainment industry through groundbreaking and innovative work.
