Since 2011, Reelworld has put the spotlight on emerging talent in Toronto with our ACTRA Shorts program. Exclusively made for the festival, this program presents six short films, written, directed and produced by members of ACTRA’s Young Emerging Actors Assembly (YEAA) – actors and burgeoning filmmakers between the ages of 17-30. Join us Sunday afternoon and discover the city's next generation of creators.

Everbliss

Alexa and Natalie are about to go on the trip of their lives; a new and controversial drug allows them to experience permanent euphoria, but strips them of the ability to speak or to process anything as language. Between ingesting the drug and experiencing its everlasting effects, these former lovers and current best friends have six minutes left to talk. Is there such thing as a perfect goodbye?

As a young daughter waits for acceptance to her dream arts program, her excitement turning to despondence as time goes on, her Caribbean mother must make a heart-wrenching decision to make sure her daughter escapes the cycle of poverty the two are caught in.

Strawweight
Director: Lindsay Murray     

A female mixed martial arts prospect must cut weight before she hits the scale for a career defining bout. However, her body stops responding to the cut and refuses to let go of the last 6 pounds in order for her to qualify in her weight class. Tempers flare as her team of trainers panic over how much they invested and sacrificed for her. In her dehydrated and delirious state, we find that one of her trainers may not have her best interest in mind.

The Drip!

The Drip! is a game show set in the near-future. In an attempt to win one million dollars and one million followers, competitors are locked in place as a single drop of water drips onto their head every ten seconds. Only the competitors can free themselves from the drip and no competitor knows where they are in the standings so they force themselves to stay as long as they can under the drip until it slowly drives them insane...

In the privacy of a totally public restaurant Patrick must inform his last six sexual partners that he gave them an STI. His ex-lovers are caught off guard when their initiation into Club Six is a touch overwhelming.

Weaving together beautiful footage of the land and frightening testimony of a former miner, director Ashton Janvier asks when enough will be enough.

Boys of Nunavut

Boys of Nunavut is a powerful, moving and necessary documentary about the mental health crisis taking place situated in Arviat, Nunavut. Director Andrew Maguire’s film shines a light on this issue caused by the loss of identity as a result of assimilation, and the hope that is the Young Hunters Program, an initiative created by community members to help at-risk youth.
