What does it take to breakthrough, to make it to the next level?

 

3 of Canada’s busier filmmakers shared what allowed them to leap from shorts to first feature, from features to directing TV, and from directing Canadian TV to US TV. They were Director-Writers Cory Bowles (Nominee best Canadian Feature TIFF 2017), Joyce Wong (2016 TIFF Talent Campus), Sherren Lee (2018 Hollywood Reporters 15 Canadian Rising Stars) and Charles Officer (Hot Docs Feature Film Winner 2017, Private Eyes, Rookie Blue). This panel responded to questions and provided insight into the craft and the business of filmmaking.

MODERATOR

ALLISON WILSON-FORBES - Film and Industry Programming Manager

Allison Wilson-Forbes has had a varied background in film production, academic study, and the performing arts. She played Nurse Alice in a small recurring role on SAVING HOPE for five seasons, and has appeared in the critically acclaimed series ORPHAN BLACK, NBC'S TAKEN & Syfy's THE EXPANSE. As a writer, producer, and director her short films have screened at festivals in Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia and Australia. She also consults as a subject matter expert arts practitioner in healthcare innovation. Wilson-Forbes has worked at film festivals Planet in Focus, Reelworld and TIFF.

CORY BOWLES

A multidisciplinary artist from Nova Scotia, Cory is known mostly for his work as an actor/director in TRAILER PARK BOYS, but also works as a television writer and frequent choreographer for stage/screen. His first feature BLACK COP premiered at TIFF 2017, going on to earn multiple prizes and a Canadian Screen Award.

CHARLES OFFICER

Charles Officer is executive producer of creative and founder at Canesugar Filmworks. His debut feature NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY premiered at TIFF '08 and earned 10 Genie Nominations. He followed with the feature documentary MIGHTY JEROME that earned 4 Leo Awards in 2011 and a 2012 Emmy Award for Best Historical Documentary. UNARMED VERSES premiered in 2017 and won Best Canadian Feature Awards at Hot Docs and Vancouver International Film Festival.  Charles directed multiple episodes of dramatic series 21 THUNDER (Netflix), and is currently in post-production with the feature documentary INVISIBLE ESSENCE: LE PETIT PRINCE (NFB).

JOYCE WONG

Wong is an award-winning director and writer whose debut feature, WEXFORD PLAZA, screened in competition at Slamdance in 2017. She is an alumna of the 2008 Berlinale Talent Campus, 2016 TIFF Talent Campus, and was named one of CBC’s 17 for '17 great Canadian filmmakers of the future

SHERREN LEE

Sherren Lee is the director of award winning short films, BENJAMIN (2015) and THE THINGS YOU THINK I'M THINKING (2017). She is a 2014 alumna of the CFC Director's Lab and last month, she was named as one of Hollywood Reporter's fifteen Canada's Rising Stars of 2018.  Her television credits include Murdoch Mysteries (CBC) & Coroner (CBC).
