What happens when the person you love most can feel so far away? How do we reconcile the differences of race and class within a relationship, and can love be enough? What can be done when the history of the world seeps into your dynamic? In her third documentary, Joella Cabulu explores the experiences of diasporic Filipinos in interracial relationships, asking what it means to build intimacy across the social and cultural differences that shape our lives.
Using playful skits alongside interviews with couples, the film explores how partners navigate making space for those differences. Reimagining romantic-comedy conventions, Cabulu uses playful reenactments to rewrite the familiar meet-cute and question the stories we have come to expect about love. What does a love story actually look like when race, class, and power are not simply part of the background, but are present in the relationship itself? How do you work through conflict when the brunt of the fight leans one way? First Comes Love: Nakabingwit asks whether love can bridge those differences, and what it takes to make a relationship work within them.

Her award-winning work brings playfulness and nuance to complex social dynamics. In First Comes Love: Nakabingwit, her first feature as writer-director, Cabalu reshapes the rom-com into a contemporary documentary about interracial relationships, communication and the courage it takes to truly see one another.
